Arch Leading to Shore
Situated at the end of Great George Street, the Arch Leading to Shore is a historic structure built in the mid-18th century with funding from local parishioners. Originally intended as a fort for protection against pirates, the construction was never completed but was equipped to house 18-20 mounted guns.
During Jamaica's sugar boom, the fort played a crucial role as a loading dock for sugar exports, connecting the island's agricultural wealth to global trade. Notably, a section of the fort was constructed in the sea, which contributed to its gradual deterioration over time due to the relentless waves.
Declared a National Monument in 2000, the Arch stands today as a poignant reminder of Jamaica's colonial history, highlighting its strategic importance in trade and defense. The site offers visitors a glimpse into the past, with its enduring structure symbolizing the resilience and legacy of the era.
